A smile of respect
for the heroes of modern slavery
in the Middle East
is to dismantle the slavery trades that are contaminating our Middle East
We are disrupters working to strategically break down the incentives that allow human beings to be bought and sold.
We are advocators of a renewed social mindset that is informed by critical thinking, deep social empathy, and action.
We are builders of a regional community that protects and respects the values of every human being within our borders.
An economic phenomenon of inhumane proportions
A thriving industry
First and foremost, modern-day slavery is a complex and intricate trade of enslaved human beings that is held together by powerful economics.
Enslaved individuals are stripped of their basic human rights, including the rights of freedom, choice, and control.
Today, this profitable industry is becoming more sophisticated with a rise in the number of humans sold and average profit margins per trade.
Not disrupting the economics makes the industry more adaptive as it learns to work with fewer social and political enablers.
Justice with respect
We need to re-think our treatment of victims and survivors. As heroes of injustice, we can learn a lot from them as we work to end slavery.
Without healthy re-integration and support to re-build their lives, our heroes will remain vulnerable to re-enslavement.
Take our lenses
to see slavery for yourself
Who is Walid? Who is Layla?
We need new lenses to understand modern-day forms of slavery.
#1Day1Hero is about recognizing these human beings for the heroes they truly are.
He is a human being, just like any of us. Except once upon a time, he was enslaved by a construction company and was forced to work day and night with no rights to receive a salary and see his family.
This is Layla.
Before escaping captivity, Layla was locked in a house where she was forced to conduct very strenuous housework seven days a week with little food and water. Today, she is thinking of going back to school.
